Completing Your Job

Finishing Up

Finishing up can be a very difficult thing to do.

How to get those last few things on a project finished and done can not only be a pain but it takes perseverance and a desire to get done and on to the next project. even though it can be difficult the feeling of accomplishment is great and moving on can give one a great feeling of self satisfaction. I know that when I can finally say all is done and I have done my best it feels good.

Then comes the dreaded punchlist.

This is usually done by the architect or on of the personell from their office.

Our job and goal is to have a complete job with no items on the punchiest. This can be done by doing your own pre-punch list for your scope of the work.

Door Frame Replacement – Restuarants are disgusting

Delivery Doors

Well its been a while since I posted and I decided it was time to get back at it. a couple of weeks a =go I was contracted to remove a couple of frames and replace some door for a local restaurant. These were on the back side where customers don’t usually go. Which in my opinion is a good thing because most would immediately lose half of the regular customers.

These doors are the ones used for deliveries and hauling out the garage. My biggest concern is staying upright while trying to remove the old doors and frames and re-installing new ones. This is because the floors are tile or smooth concrete, both very slippery when covered with a thin layer or oils and food products that hit the floor during preparation of yours and my lunch, dinner or breakfast.

I am not saying that this restaurant was not meeting the codes for cleanliness it was just very hard to walk on at first. Once I figured out what it took to stay on my feet I started to remove the frames and this is what I found.

It was pretty bad and inside one leg of the old frame there were quite a few worms and other live one cell critters that I didn’t want to touch. We were able to clean it all up and install  a new frame and seal it all up with 100% silicone caulk and it should stay bug free now. So that was the fun job of the week.

Repairing Fiberglass Doors

Repair Fiberglass Doors

Many people do not realize how easy it can be to repair fiberglass doors, especially since they can become damaged more easily than other doors. Though fiberglass is a strong material, over time, your fiberglass door can easily become scratched or cracked. Rather than spending all the money it would cost to completely replace your door, or have a professional repair it for you, you can save a lot of money doing the job yourself. You would be surprised at how easy it can be, and just how good it will look when you take the time to repair the door yourself.

Here is a list of the tools and other things you will need to repair your door:

-A grinder

-Solvents

-Paste wax

-Waxed backing

-Fiberglass fabric and mat

-Resin

Preparing Your Door for Repair

To prepare your door, you will need to locate the damaged part that you wish to repair, then take your grinder (another tool can be used instead, if you do not have one) and cut out this portion of the door at an angle. When you have the hole you wish to work with, use the solvents to clean it out thoroughly. If there is any dirt left inside, it will make it impossible for your repair to last.

Applying the Fiberglass Fabric and Mat

Once you have prepared your fiberglass door, apply the past wax around the hole to make sure that your door will look more attractive later. Then, put the waxed backer at the base of the whole to give you a sturdy place to work; it should be smooth and match the rest of the door. Measure the hole and cut your fiberglass fabric and mat- you should use two layers of the fabric, with one layer of the mat between them. You may need additional layers in order to fill the hole properly.

Adding the Finishing Touches

Now that you have done all this, it is time to add an epoxy resin to patch the rest of the hole. You should follow the directions on the resin because some may require you to use additional chemicals. The, remove any air bubbles from the resin and remove the waxed backing. All you have to do now is sand down your fiberglass door, until it is smooth and seamless.

Now that you are finished, you will be able to appreciate just how durable and strong fiberglass really is, and you will never again have to worry about the scratches and cracks that can come from years of wear and tear. Remember to be careful with your tools and chemicals to prevent the rest of your door from being damaged in the process of repairing another part of it.

This is all it takes to repair fiberglass doors. It can save you a lot of money, and keep your fiberglass door looking great. There is no need to replace it or have a professional do it for you. Doing it yourself will give you the same beautiful look that your door originally had when you first bought it, and your fiberglass door will be strong and sturdy for years to come.

August 20 2013 WSU Boimed

Today at the WSU job we ran into a lot of hollow metal doors that would not shut. After some investigation we found that the frames had been incorrectly set on quite a few openings and that the hinge prep in the doors was also incorrect. I spoke with the Curries door rep, and we decided to try a field fix first rather than have the doors sent back to a shop. We added a small amount of shimming material to the side of the hinge away from the knuckle and this placed the hinge in the correct position on the door and allowed the door to shut correctly on most of the openings.

Dutch door designs

August 20, 2013

Today I added a support strap to a custom dutch door. This was originally a 4′ x 7′ door that I cut in half just above the lock and added a shelf for a room that was remodeled. It is now a check out room for tools at Lyn-Tron. The frame was originally set up for a 3 hinge door application. When I added a continuous hinge with the bottom half carrying the dutch door self it caused the frame to bow slightly and the door did not engage the latchbolt in the strike. My solution was to weld a flat strap of 1/8″ in thick by 1 1/4″ wide by 48″ long, to the frame at midway up the door and then attach it to the studs in the wall to keep it from bowing and causing the lock not to latch correctly.

After this was complete I went to the new Springhill Suites by Marriott in CDA that we installed all the doors and hardware on and did a couple of minor punchlist items. This project was built by Vandervert Construction for KVC Development.

Door Repair and Installs

August 19,2013

Well it was hot again in Spokane. Today I was finishing the operable wall track install at 1919 Lincoln Way in Coeur d’ Alene for Williamson- Johnson Construction. It was in a room that had no air flow and was about 95 degs. It was definitely a day to drink lots of water. I will post a picture of it tomorrow. We have started to hang the hollow metal doors at the WSU BioMed project for Graham Construction.

We will have some pictures of sliding barn doors from the Springhill suites posted next week.

This past week we worked on the WSU Biomed, St Luke’s Rehab Hospital.

The St. Luke’s job consists of replacing the wood doors with fire labeled doors to match the frames. We will also be replacing two double egress frames and doors.

We also hung the doors and put on the hardware on the addition to the Spokane Valley Adventist Church.

We also started the Scafco office job and hung about 25 doors there.

We should finish the WSU job this week and that will be a big job finished.

This week we will be finishing the WSU job and continuing on with the St. Luke’s project, Scafco and finishing the Spokane Valley SDA Church.

Hard to find locks

Looking for a specific lock?

There are times when you need to replace a lock or other hardware on an older door and so you go to the local big box hardware store and can’t find anything that even is remotely close to what is on your door. This is where we come to the rescue. We have been in the door and hardware installation business for over 20 years and in the past 5 years included service and repair. Over the years we have accumulated a large inventory of older locks and miscellaneous hardware. We also have made numerous contact when looking for replacement parts for our customers. If you can snap a picture of your product and send it to us we will do our best to provide a new lock of the same or similar model to the one you have. If it just needs a new handle we can also provide those. As soon as we get a picture we will endeavor to find the part and get you a price for the replacement.
